SALARY: $23.33 - $35.00 Hourly $1,866.62 - $2,800.00 Biweekly $48,532.00 - $72,800.00 Annually OPENING DATE: 08/18/16 CLOSING DATE: 09/08/16 11:59 PM SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Under the general direction of Assistant Director of Engineering, performs a variety of skilled drafting and surveying to produce engineering maps, plans and drawings of public infrastructure improvements, and to inspect public works projects for compliance with construction specifications and public works standards. ROUTINE JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES: • Designs and prepares drawings or other illustrative materials of existing/new improvements and other utilities using notes made in the field, photographs or maps. • Catalogs and files construction plans, plat books, maps, deed and easement reference books from work orders and field inspection notes.  Scans all construction plans for archive.  Maintains databases of electronic scanned files, maps, and aerial photographs. • Reviews construction plans, plats and cost estimates submitted by consulting engineers/contractors and utilities to ensure conformance with established requirements. • Maintains and updates GIS base mapping to facilitate mapping and asset management of City infrastructure and to organize and manage electronic file structure. • Utilizes global positioning system to locate City infrastructure systems such as sanitary sewer, storm sewer, signs and fiber optics. • Gathers and provides information to contractors, consultants, city employees/departments, and the public, including as-built drawings, aerial photographs, easements, right-of-way information, and utility locations. • Responsible for the inspection and construction administration of all engineering projects including, but not limited to: paving (streets, parking lots, drive ways and sidewalks), sanitary sewer, storm sewer, grading, water main and drainage structures to insure compliance with construction specifications and approved plans. • Enforces compliance with construction specifications and public works standards.  Responds to inquiries and assists contractors and sub-contractors regarding applicable compliance requirements. • Prepares and maintains complete project inspection records. • Creates special maps requested by departments on an as-needed basis. • Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned. TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS: • High School diploma or equivalent. • At least two (2) years of experience/education in engineering design or public works construction, or  two ( 2) years of field experience in construction, engineering or inspection, or  two (2) years of an equivalent combination. • Valid Iowa Drivers' License SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION: The Civil Service testing process will consist of a phone interview, written test and onsite oral board interview. Those meeting minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the phone interview phase. Those passing the phone interview with a minimum score of 70% or higher will be invited to take the written test. Those who meet the minimum passing score of 70% or higher on the written test will be invited to participate in the onsite oral board interview phase.  Those passing the interview phase with a score of 80% or higher will be placed on the certified list of candidates eligible for hire. Candidates qualified for testing will be notified of test dates as appropriate, via the governmentjobs.com email notifications. Pre-employment drug screen required. Wapello County intern opportunity

Wapello County is seeking an individual for the position of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) Summer Intern. The Intern will work with the County GIS Coordinator and will be assigned to the County-wide Economic Development Project. The Intern will use best practices and research to develop a report/packet meant to better serve developers and investors seeking property in the Greater Wapello County Region. This project will focus on economic development within the County and will also involve areas of Planning and GIS.

Requirements for this position:

·         General knowledge of the ArcMap Suite;

·         Have the ability to research precedent and other best practices to develop a current and useful template for future use;

·         Communicate effectively to obtain information from utility companies, various County Offices, and other entities within Wapello County;

·         The Intern will live close to the area and have the ability to report to the GIS Department as often as needed;

·         Preference: be able to work with Photoshop, InDesign or other related image editing software for creating the report;

·         Preference 2: Have a recent version of Arcmap installed on a personal computer and able to work with this computer for the position;

Qualified applicants will have obtained a high school diploma or equivalent, have a valid driver’s license, and be enrolled in a geospatial information systems or Regional Planning related course of study for the 2016 Fall term. The Intern will be expected to work a minimum of 20 hours per week.
